KVA Rating of Alternator Winding

01/24/2009 11:48 PM

Each phase of a three phase alternator is rated at 42 KVA and 120 volts. It is wye connected, find (a) the line current and (b) the line voltage.

I do not understand if 42 KVA is the rating of the alternator or just one winding ?

Need some help

Thanks

Ring up your professor and get clarification,

This has happened a lot of times with my son, you assume and answer wrong and get a D (and if lucky C - depending on your professor)

Thanks for the reply.

So if the alternator has a 42KVA rating.

Does each winding have a rating of 42 KVA or 42/3 KVA?

Alternators, generators, transformers are rated in kva. That's the total rating. These devices are not rated by phase. So you need to calculated the line current and line voltage based on the 42 kva. Show us you work and we will comment on it.
