Welding Different Types of Neck Flanges

01/27/2009 5:13 PM

Hi

My question is simple but not easy.I need help from you guys.

I want to joint 2 types of welding neck flange RF with FF, I know code B31.3 it's not permitted. Even if it doesn't fall under a code requirement.

even in case someone suggest to remove the rasid face also I can't do it becuase of operation (fluid is flammble).

Material is ASTM 105 ASME B16.5 with size 3"

2 solution I got from my friends

1- use adapter ring.

2- make a 1/16" thk steel ring plate equal to the height of the raised face and to cover the area outside the bolt hole on the raised flange. So, it makes like a flat face flange.

but really I am confused.

Any other Ideas please.

Technically I don't know why a metallic gasket won't work without the modifications. Most of the flanges we use (of course in hydraulic lines) and RF type, whereas the LP pumps outlets/inlets are more often than not with flat face. In these applications we use normal spiral wound gaskets. Pressure is of course low (<20 bar). However no technical difficulty has been found.

Why don't you take advice from any gasket manufacturer ?

Again since you are working with a hazardous fluid hence my experience with hydraulic oil may not matter much. Why in the first place the pipeline was made like this ?

What has the OEM recommended ?

Can you confirm the material of the Flat Face flange?

Because if it is a ductile material you don't really have an issue.

Typically, if I dig deep enough into the related specifications, I can qualify a joint or flange the same way that the standard (catalog part) flanges have been qualified.

Read into some of the specifications listed in the ASME spec.
