Air Changes in Manufacturing Plants

01/28/2009 6:43 AM

Hi,

Im Aldwin, I want to know how many air changes is desirable in a Manufacturing Plant doing copper tube brazing and welding (30%), Painting (25%), and the rest were assembly area. We are located in KSA.

Thanks.

Aldwin

That will depend on the Code of Practice in your area. Usually between 20 - 30 air changes per hour is okay, but the best to check with the CoP.

Changes should be higher where you generate fume, it is waste to put entire plant on same (highest needed) schedule, especially if you maintain heat...or airconditioning or maintain other process temperatures in the works. The assembly area needs fewer changes than where you are brazing welding and painting.

This is more critical if materials are leaded, or if the paint is solvent based rather thanpowder coat.

Forgive my ignorance, but what exactly is KSA?

Milo I think he is in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Painting 10-20, welding 15-30 and general workplace is 8-10 ACH...

Also check client requirement if any.

Instead of looking for ventilation of whole building based on welding/brazing/painting,

please use required localised suction and filter/scrubber units to extract the fumes of these areas and vent out as per environment standards. The building will then be planned for the required /general airchanges ,as specified by government bodies/inspector of factories as applicable. This will be at the minimum level. In many countries it is between 6 to 9 air changes per hour . For operations as mentioned above air change requirements for total building will be much higher if there is no localised extraction.

This will save you money and also take care of enviroment of the manufacturing plants. your workmen will be well protected and will not inhale fumes of such operations. Please also remember unless fresh air is supplied ,extraction devices will not work efficiently.

Aldwin

For that you need to calculate the area in which the welding, and Painting and assembly going on also look in to Ashrea codes or CIBSE code complies with. And look in to the wind speed the temperature to be maintained in side, SO you have number of parameters need to look through for Ventilation and ACPH
