Swimming Pool Problems?

01/30/2009 3:27 AM

I have a gunnited pool and it has developed a few cracks. I need to fill the cracks and then renovate the gunite walls and floor. What materials do I need to use for the cracks? How do I renovate the gunite on the walls and floor of the swimming pool?

Thanks

try penetron or xypex. they are capillary crystalline growth products that you can paint on or grout on. They fill up cracks upto 0.4mm. just google the two products and you will also find that there are alot more of the same type available.

After having had this problem myself and after fixing those same cracks 3 times in three years, the only sure way to sort out your problem is to fibreglass the pool. I did this 5 years ago and have not had a single days problem. I think it might even work out cheaper at the end of the day. You will also use a lot less chemicals in the years ahead. Look up Fibreglass pools on google and see the difference.

Unless you have a lot of time and equipment on your hands, call a pro.

If your pool's old enough to be cracking, chances are you need a re plaster job.

This requires draining the pool completely and patching and renovating the plaster.

This must be done when it's cool to prevent further damage to the pool.

If you insist on doing the job yourself, get friendly with your local pool store people and see what they say. Maybe they will give you some advice.

There's a lot of stuff on the internet, too.

Good luck.

Let us know what you do. My pool has some cracks, too.

I did this once, and it really sucked a whole lot. You have to drain the pool. Then you wash the walls down with muriatic acid and a scrub brush (you need to seal the drains so the acid doesn't get into the plumbing). You need several gallons, and when you get done there are doubtless some regulations about getting rid of the residue. If I remember the 'paint' used was a special pool paint, that would seal small hair-line cracks. It might have been called 'Nelsonite'. Unless poverty forces you to to it yourself, call a pro. I've done some lousy jobs in my life. This one was truly nasty.

I repaired several problems for a friend using that spray foam insulation. I removeded the tile around the cracks and then drilled to open up hole large enough to get the tube in then sprayed in the insulation and forced the foam into the cracks. After it dried I hand sanded it down and relaced the tile using a good heavey cost of tile cemet over the old cracks.

wear some throw away gloves if you use the foam and watch for drips they can be a pain to remove.

Unless someone is hitting the walls of your pool with a forklift, why should there be cracks in your pool wall? Do the cracks indicate that the ground around your pool is settling? Fixing the result, may not stop the cause of the problem from forcing a repeat problem.

How can a pool owner find out if the ground is settling?
