GPS chip inserted/hidden on valuables

GPS chip inserted/hidden on valuables

Is there a GPS chip out yet, to buy, that can be inserted on or in valuables (paintings, antiques) in case they are stolen in order to recover?

I've searched online and only find battery operated devices. I need something disguisedly small.

Besides the GPS technology, your desired device would need some means to broadcast its location or signal you via the internet. This Lojack for stuff currently could be hacked out of an iphone, or one of thos e child tracking cell phones, but you would be subject to the limitations of its technology (low battery life) and your ability to program to respond when called by you...

Good Idea.

PND.. Personal Naviagation Device does the same thing. Yes, low battery will be a problem. When in vehical, it is connected to vehical battery. When it is with child, you can charge battery every day. But, with valuable, how to charge battery? We need new invention of very small battery which can be implanted with chip and allied circuit, including battery, which will not be noticable

I had an idea some time ago for thwarting criminals involved in foot pursuits.s. I wanted to "paint" a chemical odor on the bad guy using a paint gun that could only be seen with a tuned scope.

Hi anon4cb,

Depending on what your valuables are, you may have a couple of obstacles to overcome. If its a car or large item probably no problem, if it is a laptop, camera or TV it will be difficult.

The GPS receiver is able to tell you the location (or at least where the GPS antenna is located) but you will need to transmit this data to a third party via transmitter, internet, mobile phone etc somehow. And it needs to be powered.

The other aspect is that the GPS antenna can only know its location when it is physically in sight of one or more satellites. Hence if the valuable item (with antenna) is in a box, in a house under a roof or any position which "hides" the satellite, its whereabouts will be hidden. On a vehicle, its location can be identified when in the open but it is hidden as soon as it is in a warehouse, tunnel or underground carpark.

Hope this helps.

I think RFID is what you are asking about.

Many shipments have this type of tracking device that can have more capabilities, such as vibration, shock, etc.

It might have to to built into the frame...

Get a frame with some lights built into it. Now that power is available, hollow out part of the frame and insert your child-tracking GPS cell phone and tap into the light power lines to keep the battery charged up.

Obviously this will only work if they keep the frame with the painting/picture.

...as a backup: photograph/film EVERYTHING once in a while as an inventory of your possessions. If you ever need to get something recovered (i.e. that the police have found/seized) it will help a lot. In France there are catalogues from stores and a friends grandmother was flipping through and found a very old family heirloom for sale which WAS STILL HANGING ON HER WALL (The future thief had already broken in and taken his own inventory of 'his' stuff). Freaky...

There is something available which is very similar to that which you describe. Typically it's used for training large items like vehicles & ISO containers, however, I'm sure if you had enough money it could be developed to be smaller
