Another possible resource would be MSHA

Its the mining industries version of OSHA

www.msha.gov

It really depends on the type of mining and the open space. If it's a coal mine, the only required lighting should be mounted on the equipment and personnel. Most of the time there is lighting around transformers, tailpieces, and "mechanic shacks" where machinery is repaired. Like the earlier post, look up the MSHA site and see what it says. However, I doubt there are many lighting "requirements." However, its been a little over five years since I have worked underground on a daily basis, and could be wrong.

You might remember this classic, OCM ;

(1708 in case it's not clear) That's a copy. I don't have De Re Metallica, but I do have this little number (1875)

and more recently (1916)....

http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/mining/pubs/pdfs/ic9074.pdf

In the UK, there's "The Law Relating to safety and health in mines and quarries", available from HMSO, which includes The Coal and Other Mines (Safety lamps and Lighting Regulations) 1956. It's a bit preoccupied with explosive hazard, but does detail locations where 'whiting out' (ie painting) should be used.

Apart from getting squashed, conditions such as Nystagmus paved the way for lighting standards. This, and illumination levels are covered here
