How to improve performance of transmission?

11/03/2006 3:00 AM

I am looking a method to improve the performance of transmission with Pneumatic Power Assist. The porblem I have is that my synchronisers are wearing out too quickly. Any suggestions?

Watch how a little old lady drives...drive like that, or double clutch.

synchronizers wear faster when pushed to allow snap changes, as in drag racing

Dragracing is dragracing, face the facts you are going to burn through everything due to the fact that there are not adiquate materials that can handle the hp/torque ratios your engine is developing. You need to spend the extra $400.00 for the super heavy duty internal parts. Read this link about transmissions and the cost for HP.

Good luck.

AS a follow-up to Aurizon's post; double-clutching is the answer to long transmission and clutch life. It is not an easy technique with that to train someone, and of course one must become accustomed to the vehicle so they can do it by sound and not by watching the tacho.

Lessons learned as a farm boy, still useful later in life. I still drive in this manner these days, and get well over 200,000 miles on each clutch. And, I drive quite hard.

As one who is sometimes considered almost on the edge of extinction along with the dinosaours, I spent a good share of my early adult life trying to make a living as a truck driver. This was when we were delighted to find that we had 270 horsepower and only a single gearshift to play with. The only time that I would use the clutch was upon starting out or stopping. The rest of the time it was a game of matching the engine speed to the transmission speed and with a little practice, we could go through as many as 16 different speeds and not spill a drop of our coffee. I racked up 1 million miles and never had a clutch problem. The most important trick was to always start in the lowest gear and "idle" away from a stop, not try to slip the clutch to get started. It was also a good technique to use on ice and snow.

If you could use planetary gears as in an automatic transmission and change ratios by applying brakes to the annular gears perhaps it would solve the problem. Of course this would make the gear box much more expensive.
