Required Power Consumption for Electroplating

02/10/2009 11:01 AM

Does anyone here know how to calculate the electrical power consumption required for electroplating and electrodialysis? How example, using 415VDC, how many kWhrs are required to remove 1 mole of copper from a 10% copper chloride solution, assuming that there is 1m3 of solution? Similarly, using 415VDC, how many kWhrs are required to migrate 1 mole of copper from a 10% copper chloride solution to the cathode, assuming that there is 1m3 of solution? Also, where can I find the energy densities of carbon, hydrogen, and methane? Finally, what is the specific heat capacity of copper hydroxide, and at what temperature will it dissociate into elemental copper and water vapor?

Thanks, everyone, for your assistance.

According to an ancient book ("Technical Chemists Handbook"; Lunge 1929) the electrochemical equivalent of copper from a cupric salt is 1.1852gm/amp hr.

Sorry, I don't know the minimum voltage required to make it work. I suspect it is of the order of about 1.5 volts but that is only a guess.

Okay, thanks. I think 1.5V should work too, since my brother and I once used a normal alkaline battery to do it.
