Expansion Device for Air Conditioners

11/04/2006 3:15 AM

Two commonly used type of expansion device for ACs are Thermostatic Expansion Valve and simple capillary tubes. TXV is considered better than capillary, as it maintains same superheat through out the indoor and outdoor temperature range. As capillary is a simple pipe, the flow rate changes with pressure differential. So, keeping the indoor conditions same, the superheat reduces as the outdoor temperature increases. This is severe in tropical areas. TXV also has a problem. As the superheat is maintained, the discharge temperature is comparatively high at high outdoor temperatures. In most of the cases, the dischage temperature reachesaround 240 to 250°F @ 125°F outdoor temperatures. Discharge temperature above 225 to 230°F is not good as there is chance of oil disentegration.

Which is a better selection between these? Is there any means to avoid the issue of very low or even no superheat at high outdoor temp? Or any other expansion device? Pls evaluate based on reliability point of view of compressor.
