It is good to have fun but these young people may not be knowing these old terminology (as these old switch gears are getting eliminated) which he might have heard from some old electrician who is working under him. Out of shame to ask that old workmen he might have asked such a simple question here. Let us not make fun of him .

In that context, you most likely mean God-object which, object-oriented programming, is an object that does too much rather than having a number of task-oriented objects that communicate with one another.

GOD is a Gang Operated Device and DOF is Drop Out Fuse.

In HT overhead distribution this two terms are commonly used earlier( even now this is used to refer these manual pole mounted switches ) since the the two were used for switching off and protection. It is called as gang operated since the unit is operated in a gang for three phase switching in substations and OH. distribution.

I think it may be useful for our guest to know the purpose for gang-operated-switching - to avoid ferro-resonance, which can be a dangerous result of one line opening at a time as in DOF's. Specially relevant when a delta load is at the end of a long extension, and even more-so when that extension is paralleled in the inductive field of a HT line.

Thank you for your explanation of ferro- resonance effect. In India we are using GOD and DOF mostly due to the economic advantage. They are much cheaper compared to Pole mounted circuit breakers. The only disadvantage is GOD can be operated off load. DOF replacement is time consuming and more labour oriented which is accepted in Indian conditions.
