Welding PTFE to PFA

02/13/2009 11:29 AM

Hello all, I have a project were I need to weld PTFE teflon to PFA teflon. I have welded PFA to PFA before in the past, and know that there is a modified PTFE that will weld fine with PFA. But this project requires non-modified PTFE to be welded to PFA. If anyone has any input, I would appreciate it. Thanks, Jim

I think PTFE is thermo setting polymer and can not be welded since will not fuse but char on heating beyond a temperature.

But there are many ways to join two dis-smiler materials by force. Say, if you are to join a PFA tube to PTFE tube, you can by flaring the ends and support by loose metal flanges.

Tell more of your requirement, what is the purpose and shapes of your interest.

While PTFE is a thermoplastic, near melting temp it starts breaking down.

From memory it liberates Fluorine, not something you want to have around as it is very toxic.

It may be possible to friction weld the two if your parts are of a shape to be amenable to this.

Gluing is possible, but PTFE is notoriously difficult to glue.

Does this have to be welded? Would it be possible to press the 2 parts into a mold and sinter them?

More detail on the parts involved would be a help.

Unfortunately, yes this does need to be welded. I have found that the PTFE needs to be pre-heated for a longer period of time. This is our problem now. Since we are hand welding, we are trying to come up with a way to pre-heat the material. The part is a 24" dia. PFA drum in which a PTFE flange needs to be welded at each end.

We are set up with fresh air respirators that are worn during welding process.

We have also heard of a chemical pre-treatment used on the PTFE prior to welding.

Thanks for any input. Jim

If quantities are sufficient to justify it, a friction welding rig shouldn't be too hard to set up.

This method produces a good result and would be faster than manual welding.

This is out of a "Global Spec" information sheet.

Plasma pre preparation may well be an answer to your problem.

Hello Jim, I developed this a few years ago at Levitronix GmbH in Zurich - you may contact this company for a potential cooperation (www.levitronix.com) or I could give you some advice for set-up, processes etc. Best regards Dieter
