Designing tsunami-proof homes

05/29/2005 11:09 AM

A team of researchers from MIT are using the findings of a London-based group of structural engineers to design homes that would survive the wind and surf produced by a tsunami. The new designs suggest changing the placement of walls in relation to the seashore, raising structures and using materials that allow water to flow through easily so that they don't collapse.

Local meterials

It's nice to see that they are using local materials and are keeping the prices low. Most of the storm proof houses in the Gulf of Mexico are huge concrete affairs that are shaped like bubbles. A tsunami proof house is only good if people can afford to live in one.

Here here. The materials aren't much use if people can't afford them. The article said only that the house "was designed to be made from materials readily available in Sri Lanka." Available does not equal affordable.
