A trigger is what starts a sequence of events. Such as a thermostat will switch to a closed set of contacts when the temperature gets cold. The igniter will continue the event by igniting (theres that word again) the gas or fuel used to heat the air, water, whatever and keep you warm.

A trigger can also be a switch on an alarm system, a sensor in electronics or electrical wiring, anything that starts the actual sequence of events. Could even be a start button.
