Flushing and Removing Air from CHW Systems

02/16/2009 4:53 PM

Dear colleagues I have a project where I install a chilled water system is there a guideline somewhere in the web where I can find how to remove the air in the system and procedures for flushing the pipe this is in the early stages of installation prior to the startup

If there are no vents you can flange burp it. If it is currently flush to drain, open ended or similar (low pressure)then you can crank it up and let it flow for, ohhh I don't know, a week or so (seriously). Some cycle flushing will help.

While you are doing this make sure not to let excessive pressure build, as this could have dangerous even catastrophic or fatal results.

Once you have enough air out you can go hunt down the design engineer and kick him in the shins - or better yet have him crank the valve handle while cycling.

I think you have your steps in the wrong order.

First get the design engineer out to the job site and ask him to assist in getting the air out. After he is thoroughly wet, dirty, and tired, THEN kick him in the shins.

TexasCharley is correct. But since you say this is still in the project stage:(1) Install a vent to bleed air at every high point, (2) Install a vent to drain water at every low point, (3) Install a backflow-prevention make-up water line (Refill line) at the lower pressure point (Pump Inlet) and make sure the incoming water is at a higher pressure than the system water, and (4) if it a closed loop system install an expansion tank. Good Luck!

All previous comments are correct. If you still in the design/ construction stage, I suggest that you add an inline air separator from either Caleffi or Spirax Sarco.

I like the responses I see. I would also recommend an air scoop. B & G is a good source. Have you considered propylene glycol?

Normal practice in US would not purge water system with nitrogen, it is not deemed to be worth the expense. Flushing system with water to trap and eliminate debris is usually followed by draining and filling with treated water for the system requirements.

Nitrogen purging will be done on refrigerant systems, hydro-carbon liquids, and specialty gas systems, where either a high degree of purity is desired, or where flammable/combustible safety issues are present.
