Polystyrene Material for Foam Cups

02/17/2009 2:37 AM

Hello Fellow Engineers,

I am looking for the precise name of a kind of polystyrene foam.

I would like to make a special formed insulation box, which is

-heat resistant up to 100 C degree

-will not let water through.

-may get in contact with food.

The foam blocks we use as insulation for our buildings is melting about 70C degree, but I know there are cups used to store hot drinks at some fastfood restaurants, which are resistant up to 110 C degree.

Does anyone know what is the latter one exactly called and maybe who manufactures this kind of cups? Maybe in Europe?

Thank you for your TIME.

Gergely

165° F(75°C) is about the limit of polystyrene foam. I know of no restaurants that serve coffee at 110°C. Be a little hard to keep it in the cup.

There are other foams that will do the job look here http://www.generalplastics.com

Or Google high temperature foams

Hello OzzB, thank you very much!

I will check the link, thank you for that as well. I was already looking at polyurethane rigid foams, but they are expensive, and as far as I know they are not checked for food contact.

I have a picture and the person who is selling these cups told me that according to the data sheet it is good up to 110 C degree. I would like to get a box made, so what are these cups made of?

Hirsch-gruppe.com is next door in Austria molding expanded polystryrene. They can help you with this. There are some EPS foams available that can withstand higher temperatures, but not above 100C.I have never seen a pressure vessel made out of foam.

We use this one http://www.novachemicals.com/dylite/docs/F271T_datasheet.pdf

and it works great. Professional raw material for cups = NOVA Chemicals.

But I must say many other companies, even from Asia do the same as well as Nova.

It you were to buy from them, ask for raw material sample bag first and test it.

You may also want to see if you have the adequate machine to make the cups, some machines are poor material made, poor tooling, wrong process controlling equipment, etc

with machines like this you'll need a cup leakage detector before stacking/wrapping the cups.

I make all this machinery if you're interested - give me a buzz if need any.

Dear Beriberi and Sun!

Thank you, and sorry for not replying immediately. For a couple of days I could not reach to CR4.

I find your answers very helpful and showed me a path to follow. I will look through and get back to you again.

Thank You again!

Apparently some of the starch based plastics can be foamed and used for hot drink cups.

The advantage of these is they are biodegradable. (This means if you store them too long they fall apart)

Sorry, I don't know any more about them, but a google search would probably unearth more than you ever wanted to know.
