Pressure Testing a Transformer Tank

02/18/2009 5:13 AM

Can tank of corrugated win wall type of 1000kVA/22/0.4kV (IEC 60076) distribution transformer endures a pressure test of 0.5bar, duration:5h without any over - expanding or damage?

Corrugated fin wall: deepth:330mm, heighth:1100mm, total length:1200mm.

Are there standard test values of pressure for this kind of test of transformer tank?

Many thanks

Transformers are pressure tested to ensure that they can withstand pressures in this range especially if they are inert gas blanketted , nitrogen in most cases .

Typical inert gas pressure can be 0.1 to 0.4 bars.

transformer s which are not inert gas blanketted normally operate at near atmospheric pressire because they will be invariably free-breathing , either to a conservator "bag" or to atmosphere. The free-breathing is required as the oil expand and contract with temperature.

Why , exactly, do you want to test the tank at 0.5 bars ( I assume gauge pressure ,, that is 0.5 bars above atmospheric which works out to be approx 7.5 psig) ?

Usually , the big question is whether the tank can withstand a vaccuum!!!!! And if it can , how much of a vaccuum.

If you press it up quickly while it is energized you can do the extra "Lock-Out Test" also.

corrugated tank should be tested at 2.8 psi but it can withstand a pressure of 4.5 psi witout deformation.
