Lead in Kids' Books: "Down the Memory Hole"

02/19/2009 5:56 PM

Here's something really good --

It seems that the CPSC has determined that pre-1985 children's literature constitutes a clear and eminent health hazard.

So, in the interest of "getting the lead out," they're forcing libraries and second-hand stores across the US to discard those items circumscribed in the new ruling which took effect 2.11.2009.

From City Journal, 2.12.2009:

"Whatever the future of new media may hold, ours will be a poorer world if we begin to lose (or "sequester" from children) the millions of books published before our own era. They serve as a path into history, literature, and imagination for kids everywhere. They link the generations by enabling parents to pass on the stories and discoveries in which they delighted as children. Their illustrations open up worlds far removed from what kids are likely to see on the video or TV screen. Could we really be on the verge of losing all of this? And if this is what government protection of our kids means, shouldn't we be thinking instead about protecting our kids from the government?"

Walter Olson
The New Book Banning

I find it ironic that the target materials in this campaign are defined as those being of 1984 vintage and earlier.

Life imitates art?

<sigh> What's next, getting rid of lead shielding in X-ray machines and nuclear reactors. The amount of lead in printed text pigment is so small as to be laughable. What is the world coming to.

Well, they started with the ban of any form of prayer in schools. Now they want God out of the 1 dollar bill, the bill of rights and the presidential oath. What's next?

It gets crazier everyday.

This nonsense will not soon end; I am afraid.

And to think of all the years of fishing, where I was taught to cinch the weight on the line with a firm bite of the teeth.

Maybe that's what's wrong with me.

I remember when all the house water pipes where lead, and how they burst during the winter, and as kids we stood around while they dug up the pavement to repair it. Now where did I put that book?

Another case for FOLLOW THE MONEY!

Of course they'll have to reprint all those books with new ink. What will they do with the old ones? If they burn them the lead will just go into the atmosphere. Just think about the black market value of books that get snuck past the burners.

I see all kinds of money to be made. Besides that, they can employ lots of writers and editors to make sure those books are all politically correct.

This is very sad. Yet another poorly thought out government regulation that will do virtually nothing to reduce health safety problems for children.

It will certainly pump up citizen opposition to all government efforts in the environmental and product safety areas especially some of those that are desperately needed.

The science is being ignored here by a do nothing, know nothing Congress whose members are incapable of crafting and passing well thought out legislation.

I personally hope the Feds bust some bookseller or ebay seller very soon and the press gets hold of the case and makes a big deal out of it. Stupid folly needs a bright light to be shone on it.

In my child hood - there were no filtered water and what is a mineral water ?

We used to drink from school taps - what was Zero-B ?.

All newspapers, water taps - et al were having quite significant lead.

Father was a chain smoker (Heard about passive smoking) and so do I but not comparable (who can beat own dad ?)

Antibiotics were last resort (may be just before saying goodbye ) -

But we still survive.

I think the germs were not so intelligent then . Nor were we (we didn't know about the harms of lead, mercury etc se our body proceseed them as natural. Now it knows so...)

BTW: Good opportunity for us to buy all those treasures at cheap rate- you are definitely going to dump them on us. Only problem is we too have some greens around .

The first amendment right to freedom of the press does not exist if there is any excuse to ban books. Congress passed the law unanimously, without reading it first. What do we pay them for? In a related effort, thrift stores not only have to get rid of the pre-1985 books, they also get rid of the donated toys, including bikes and big Wheels, which are not tested for lead and which toddlers might gnaw on. Such paranoia is truly insanity, but our congresscritters are not required to be sane.

I just discussed this subject at length with my 64 year old mother. The discussion we had shows that the appalling nature of this 'law' bridges generations.

As she said; "A child suffers a far greater chance of bleeding to death from a paper cut or of losing an eye from a sharp corner than it does from the exposure to lead".

You said it Mom.

Don't make me cry Some lurking bean counting fanatic insurance adjuster is going to read your post, and soon every book will have to come with a stern warning about the t-t-paper cuts and the ccc-eye-pokey hazardous corners... then they'll pass a law that no book should have squared corners that are threatening the little children's eyes...

they'll destroy every book in the empire, and replace em with round ones.. lovely round ones with all the approved stories in them (you only need one..)

What about books from library racks falling on somebodieshead and causing mental agony (as if the person anyway had any mental senses ) worth $1m

We have to ban libraries or the books should be kept in libraries only in the rackes at eye level (auto adjustible depending on viewer). You know you bend back to see the tytle and you may bake back-ache- Some repeated stress damage or somrthing like that term.

So books are out (at least hard cover)

No rectangular all should be in nice circular format.

Pages should be in thick card-board- no chances of nick

Libraries with single row system (so State libraries may cover a couple of sq-mile area)

With that the weight should be leow- so may be each bolume should be in about 20 pages - so a book like War and Peace may run to Volume 500 or so (got to go and check no pf pages, making a wild guess)- then may be more say 2000- the printing was small in my copy (paparback) that will stress my eyes - so the printing fornt should be optimum (12 ?)

E-books are no good either - or are they better ? (I personally like the feeling of paper- don't like to read too large a post on screen)

Well the same legislators read these books when they were kids so this is proof of their bad influence, maybe we should also ban all legislators who were born before 1984 as the lead has surely disrupted their higher brain functions
