02/20/2009 12:49 AM

I am javed want to know that what is the basic defference in composition of SS 304 & SS 316. And also want to know that which meterial is better to resiste corrosion in open environment and when we use both metarials in water why it is better than the other. Where H2S gas is emitting which will be better to use.

they are both austenitic stainless steel. SS 316 contains Moly approx 2.5 % and this give to the SS 316 an higher resistance to corrosion particularly in environments with Chlorides. as a general rules in water the limit for SS304 is approx 200-500 ppm of Cl while for SS 316 is approx 1000 ppm of Cl. so SS 316 has an higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion but not to Stress Corrosion Cracking.

regarding the resistance in contact with H2S the resistance is the same. if it's an oil&gas environments you should have a look at nace / iso 15156.
