Automatic transmission fluid is circulated through the torque converter by a pump within the transmission. So ATF.

Are you wondering what ATF is made from? It is mainly mineral oil, with many additives.

The type of fluid would depend on the application. Most vehicals use a mercon/dextron fluid. The current standard of this is Mercon/Dextron V. Good Luck.
