Ethernet Printer Problems

02/23/2009 1:23 AM

Hi

I am having some troubles with my home wireless network. It appears that at times my ethernet connected printer is not recieving the required information to print and the print job fails on time out. There are no error messages other that the failed printing message. When I check the printer information via the control panel there does not seem to be any problems. The printer only sits about 500mm from the wireless router so I dont think distance is a problem. This also seems to be erratic in that sometimes it works well and other times only leads to frustation. I am running windows XP with a netgear wireless router and a HP photosmart printer.

Please help

Ray,

I had similar problems with my home wireless setup. I have two printers attached to the network, and have always been able to print to them fine with any WIRED computer on the network. On a wireless connected laptop, I would add the printers, successfully print the test page, and think all was great, but the next time the computer was rebooted, I would get the same error as you describe, a timeout error with no details. I'm pretty sure the problem was related to my wireless router, specifically, with it's built-in firewall. I never did find the right advanced settings to get things to work properly. I now have a different wireless router, and the problem is gone, I can now print from wirelessly connected computers as well as the wired ones.

Sorry that's not very specific, but perhaps it at least narrows down your search. I know the trick in this situation is to set up a rule in the firewall that will not block connections/communication between the wireless client and the printer. That is, if you in the same situation that I was. The only way I figured out it was a router problem was the fact that the problem went away when I upgraded to a newer router.

Wireless networks are not very dependable, try to increase distance some hundred millimeters, or use a 500mm wire instead.

I had a similar problem once and eventually discovered that when I didn't have my wireless mouse turned on, I got no interference with my wireless router. I switched to a hard-wired mouse and the problem went away. Note: The wireless mouse was not Bluetooth.
