The Right Voltage for Tan Delta Test

02/26/2009 11:44 PM

Hello.

would you please help me regarding the Tan Delta test, I want to know what is the right voltage to test the Dissipation factor in transformers with the following voltages actually I make my test with an ELTEL 500 INSTRUMENT with 500 vac output:

HV Side 13.8 kv LV side 480 volts.

HV Side 34.5 kv LV side 4.16 kv.

HV Side 4.16 kv LV side 208 volts

all the units are oil immersed.

thanks for you support. Mario

The two tan-delta test sets (I know of) are built by Doble which is a relative reading, you can compare the reading to other units of the same construction tested by other Doble test sets and the Tettex Instruments (marketed in the US by Haffely last I knew) instrument which gives an absolute measurement.

The output voltage of the built-in power supply is typically adjustable to 12kVDC as I recall. The correct voltage and procedure for testing can be found on the IEEE website http://www.ieee.org/portal/site search for the type of device you want to test.

The Tettex Instruments unit can be used with an external power supply to test at different voltages as I recall, I do not know if the Doble can.

Thanks Coronacameraman.

I try to find something in IEEE.
