SolidWorks 2009 - Two Bases, One Part

03/02/2009 4:09 AM

Hi!

I have a problem with Solidworks. How to create two different sheet metal with different bases in one part. Example: I have create a rectangular profil and I want to create two different sheets metal to weld all this together. I think there is a small catch that I can`t find it. How to create two different sheet metals, that have two different bases.

Befor I was working with Inventor and it was easy. Now I changed company and here they have SW and it`s not easy any more to do this weldment

Thanks for your time

Why can't you make each sheet a part and bring them together into the assembly?

Because I want to create a weldment part, then when I create a drawings, I have a part list of the weldment pieces. Yes I can create a assembly, then put it into another assembly, but I think this is not the right way to work with SW. We can say that I want to create a weldment assembly.

I simply don`t know how to create two or three different sheet metal that is gona be welded togeher with another L-profile in a part model.

Have you read through the Help section?

Do you have to show flat patterns for bent sheetmetal parts?

Make each one a different configuration of one part.

Simke, In Inventor you would create the two parts and locate them in the assembly using assembly constraints and simply click "make weldment" ands put in your weld beads. There are 2 approaches in solidworks. The first is to create and place the parts in an assembly, except solidworks doesn't have a weldment option for assemblies. Which completely bites because you can't use weld beads in assembly mode like you can in Inventor. So any weld beads would have to be put in one of the parts. The other method, which I believe is what they intended is to create the entire welded part in a part file and place your weld bead. When you create a base flande for a second time it automatically converts it. You create both parts as one, and fake the bom. You will run into similar issues with frame weldments.

From SW itself....

When you create the first structural member in a part, a weldment feature is created and added to the FeatureManager design tree. The software also creates two default configurations in the ConfigurationManager: a parent configuration Default<As Machined> and a derived configuration Default<As Welded>.

As a previous poster mentioned, use of configurations come into play. But ya know, nothing ever seems to work "seemlessly"...

Oh... one more thing... one may use 2 separate BODIES.... make sure you turn off the default MERGE switch when creating 2nd body in the property box. Hope that helps.
