Microsoft Project 2007 - Shifting Work Resources

03/03/2009 1:57 PM

I am trying to change my default calendar in ms project so that all my crews work 12 hrs a day, 7 days a week. Before you berate me or call the labor board let me explain we work construction 7 to 7:30 and 7 days a week for projects. the resources are changing. My problem is this when I set up the new calendar, it states 7:00 to 7:30, However when I create a 1 day job, and assign a resource, the resource usage chart shows 8 hrs 1 day and 4 hrs the next Please help, feel free to call me names if it is followed by the information I need

Hi, I am working with an older version of MS project but I believe this feature has not changed very much. I assume that when you modify your standard calender you click on "extras" and then select "change calendar" (sorry if the nomenclature is not correct, I use German as standard language). Then you enter the work time, e.g. 7 to 7:30. Now Here's the trick: You have to click on "options" (bottom of the change calendar box). This opens a new box with input boxes for hours per day, hours per week and days per month (default setting is 8 hours per day). You have to make the relevant inputs her, in your case 12 hours per day, .... to make sure that the correct hours are calculated when you assign resources to your activity. I hope this helps!

I have done that, I have change the working times
7:00 to 7:30

hours per day 12

Hours per week 84

Days per month 30

if I assign 1 day to a task it does register as 12 hours, but it splits the work to 2 days 8 on one day, 4 on the other

Yes, I see. Have you already assigned teh work times to the ressources? Unfortunately, the calendar does not change settings for teh resources. For changeing resource settings make a double click on teh resource. Then select resource details.

Another trick might be create a project calender based on the 24 hours calender, but I have never tried that.

I had to change each day of the week for the resources, it was a little time consuming, but it did work. I was hoping to change the default so I didn't have to do this for each individual resource,

But Oh well

Thanks for all the help

Now stand by and watch what happens when a nice software solution comes up against the cold hard world of reality and natural cycles built into the humans required to implement the solution. Watch your employee efficiency ratings and product quality parameters when this is implemented. I refer you to a saying (written by me) above my office desk: "You never want profits dependent on employees or critical equipment operating at 100% of capacity"...george

OK, guess I have at least found a workaround for that "effect" (arghh.. Microsoft!!)

If you start form scratch, i.e. if you use the assistnt feature, this will lead you to a numer of steps to create a new project. I did a trial based on the 24 hors calendar, following the project assistent. The trick is that MS Project uses several calendars: task calendar, resource calendar, basic calendar,... . It is necessary that you define your specific time schedules in all calendars Project offers. Then the schedule will be deiplayed in teh correct manner and the calculations will be correct. Did I say that sometimes I would rather put that system into the trash bin?

Hope you could follow that explanation
