Aligning water pipe

03/03/2009 10:39 PM

Dear friends,

I was thrusted upon by responsibility for lying up water pipe of diameter around 3 meters. And, my boss asked me to provide support underneath pipe at some fixed interval, so that pipe will be in a straight line in both views (horizontal and elevation). Total station will be at my disposal.

1. Can any body guide me how to carry out the job?

2. Any software is available for the job, to conclude deviation in both views independently?

Can any body help me out of the situation?

Thanks

Sameer

Tell your boss it isn't possible. The only way you can guarantee that the pipe will be in a straight line is to support it continuously throughout its length. Supporting the pipe at any interval will result in a deflection, which means that it is not in a straight line. Tell your boss that he ought to know better.

Thanks for the reply and apologize for the incomplete data, sagging in inevitable and allowable tolerance of the axis is +/- 2 mm.

It depends very much on the pipe material and the type of joint.

You do not say whether your pipeline is aboveground, or somehow to be supported at intervals below ground, but in any case there is much guidance e.g. concerning such pipe-on-support design and construction in AWWA Manual M11 applicable to such large steel pipes 9see also guidance page 11 etc. at http://www.acipco.com/aswp/pdfs/ASWP2-Design.pdf).
