Wanted: Aftermarket Parts for Cummins KTA 50 G1 Engines

03/04/2009 2:08 AM

We have a used cummins kta 50 g1 v16 1050 kva 50 hz that needs repair work. We need to change the all the inlet valves, seats and guides and we also need to replace all the ring sets. The problem is that genuine cummins parts are out of our budget which after market/oem brand would be the next best to cummins original parts

I take care of a large number of medium and high speed diesel engines, and I can tell you from personal experience (most learnt the hard way) a high speed engine like the K series you are dealing with needs to be removed from service to accomplish a quality overhaul.

These engines produce too much power relative to there size as compared to there medium speed cousins.

I as well as my friends in the Drilling and Marine industry simply exchange them around 25,000 accumulated hours. This can be done quickly so you can return to your operations while the worn engine can be shopped, striped to bare block, all parts thoroughly checked and either re-qualified or replaced as needed.

Just to name a few points, you failed to mention checking gear train, cam bearings, main bearings, fuel pump, etc.

In most cases a KTA-38 can be exchanged for 95,000 and the 50 (16 cyl) 105,000.

This is the best solution period. I could put you in touch with some good contacts if need be.

Sure you can piece an engine together, it may or may not last depending on your application and luck. That would be better determined by you...

It is not the price of the Cummins parts that is your problem, it is the markup that you are paying.

The exchange engine route is a very good way to go. The exchange motor is ready to be installed when it arrives. Your engine will need to be dismantled before some parts can be purchased. That will only delay your rebuild. If you shop for prices on a re-manufactured engine, you only have to be concerned with the installation procedure. You can also decide on the on how much experience the re-builder has before your engine is all over the place. Good luck.
