Electric Cars - APUs Instead of Batteries?

03/13/2009 4:47 AM

I'm not an engineer but, I do know what is hazardous and not enticing to generate support for an electrical item, and that is not having to plug it in or have battery acid spilled all over you during a collision. Maybe, even a small one. Another problem is the inefficiency of gearing. Such as; driveshafts and differentials. Get rid of them. I have seen a company in the Netherlands that has reversed the concept of a generator. The rotor has become the stator and vice versa. Making the generator into a traction motor. Not only could this become the source of power to the road and eliminate the need for gearing but generate possibly more energy. This all could be run by a Natural Gas or propane powered generator. Quite green, very effiecient and long lasting. My problem is I haven't the knowledge (or time and energy left) to work this out. But, Iknow one thing if you think you are going to entice people to want to use your elctrical vehicle forget it if you have to plug it into the wall or roadside or whatever and wait for it to charge-up. It ain't gonna happen with the general public.

When the cost of fuel for a vehicle cost a days pay or more you will be surprised what people are willing to do.

And as to the switching of the traction motor from a motor to a generator it has been and is being done every day. I is called regenerative braking has been incorporated on electric lift trucks for over 20 years.

Also I might add, diesel electric train engines.

As Ozzb said, it is called regenerative braking, and is used in all sorts of electric, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Regenerative braking is a key piece of the charging puzzle.

As for whether or not people will be willing to plug in their vehicle, certainly some may be a bit put-off by it at first, but think about making that tiny sacrifice to enable a person to avoid gas stations almost completely. Also, one could very easily envision a non-contact inductive charging system where you simply drive your car over a pad in your garage & you charge up without plugging it in. THis is not my area of expertise, but I am sure some brainiac somewhere is already on it.

As for me, personally, I would gladly plug my car in each night to charge at off-peak rates, and avoid going to the gas station.

Do sada nije bilo nikakvih resenja.

Imam nekoliko resenja koja ubrzo treba da budu u proizvodnji.

Google "Wheel Motor".You will find they have been around a while.A similar motor is a roller motor used on conveyor systems.

Dynamic braking has been used on industrial fork trucks and pallet jacks for many years. It has been proven to extend range of the batteries.

How about this for chargeing a battery powered vehicle:

Transformer primaries imbedded in the highway, with the secondary in the vehicle. When you pass over the transformer coils , if your battery is low, it will receive a charge from the transformer as you pass over.(Imagine a transformer with a very long primary coil.)

Imagine this as a modified MAG LEV system. You dont use the magnetic field to levitate, only to charge.Existing highways could be used, reducing costs.

The charge for this electricity will be debited from your bank account, so you only pay for what you use. The transformers could be switched off until a signal is received from a passing vehicle in need of a charge. This trigger signal could have sufficient lead time to trigger the transformer before you get to it.These on-the-fly charging systems could be installed every few miles or more , determined by a heretofor unestablished standard. This would also allow freight carrying vehicles to use battery power. The fast charge capabilities of the newest batteries, and super capacitors could make this feasible in the near future.

Whatcha think?Any serious investors?
