Sony STR DB2000 Home Cinema Receiver

03/14/2009 5:13 PM

I have used this amp/receiver for many years with no problems. Disconnected 2 rear surround speakers to reroute cabling. Ran without them connected with no problem.

Rearranging room today decide to reconnect rear speakers. Connected one to see which one was which and amp after switching on gave error "Protector/Check Code 11" and switched itself off. Connected other speaker and still it gave this error. Disconnected them both and tryed again, same error. Finally disconnected all speakers and amp now gives this code all the time and won't stay on.

Checked manual for this code and it states "Irregular current output to the speakers. Turn off the receiver and check the speaker connections. Then turn on the power again."

As I said tryed this and still get the code. Think I may have shorted the cable of one of the speakers to the casing or something like that.

Bought the service manual for this receiver online and checked what it had to say about the code. It states "Irregular current output to the speakers. Turn off the receiver and check the speaker connection. Then turn on the power again. Becomes this display , When short current flowed with breakage of the power MOS, or when detection resistor becomes open in connection with it."

I now have the service manual and a rudimentary electronics knowledge. Need some help to maybe check a couple of components myself.

Usually that happens to me when only a few things occur. First, if there are any wires that are touching each other, grounding out somewhere like a drywall screw to a metal stud, or:

There is an impedance mismatch somewhere either on the amp side or speaker side, they both must be matched properly or:

Some installs we do utilize dimmers, or volume controllers that are rated improperly.

Check your amp wattage and speakers, make sure they are rated for each other and that you aren't trying to power other speakers on the receiver around the house etc that exceeds capability. Out of the three times that happened, it was never a problem with the receiver.

good luck !

If all of speakers and connection ok, try to check sound amplifier circuit, maybe there's some bad connection, or bad capacitor, if everything ok, but there still error message, try to disconnect sound amplifier VCC, maybe the amplifier have short circuit.

Had the same problem with my Nakamichi, try running it through the setup/room balance program so the receiver will recognize the added speakers.

Did you ever completely disconnect the receiver from mains? Maybe this will make'm forgetting the error 11? Also removing the backup battery - if there's any - might do it. And last but not least: There might be some hidden power-on sequence to get rid of tripped safety things. Something like "on powering-on press and hold the mute button for at least 15 seconds"... Good Luck!
