Coke Conveyor System

03/18/2009 2:43 PM

How is coke conveyed from the time coal is proccessed up until to the coke oven in a coke plant or coal mine? Coke is very abrassive and I thought one could use an Abrassive Resistant Conveyor belt, is it reasonable to do so?

Thanks.

Based on my education watching Dirty Jobs, coke is poured out onto a cooling table, and then to the conveyer belt, thence into rail cars.

You asked "How is coke conveyed from the time coal is proccessed up until to the coke oven in a coke plant or coal mine? Coke is very abrassive and I thought one could use an Abrassive Resistant Conveyor belt, is it reasonable to do so?"

1) coal is mined, crushed and putinto rail cars

2) rail cars moved to coke plant- dumped- coal conveyed to storage yard

3) coals of different volatilities are mixed and blended using whatever you do, (we used bulldozers)

4) coal is loaded onto conveyors and conveyed using rubber belts and steel troughing rollers

5) coal is held in elevated bins for loading into hopper cars on top of oven battery

6) Hopper cars accept coal and move to oven to be charged, dump it into charging holes (method to minimize emissions is up to you, I ain;t tellin)

7) Lids on oven are sealed with clay and volatiles cooked out of coke

8)Oven doors are removed after coal is coked, Pusher pushes coke cake into quench car

9) Quench car rides down rails to quench tower, quenched with water, huge cloud of chemicals drifts over neighboring countryside raining chemicals on homes, laundry, and autos

10) quench cars dumps coke onto a cooling wharf where it waits to be conveyed

11) wharfman opens gates and coke slides onto rubber conveyor with ceramic torughing rollers to loadout bins

12) loadout bins dump coke into rail cars for transport.

The danger to conveyor belt from coke is more likely to be from fire if not fully quenched. rubber doesn't like heat, let alone fire. The belts usually fail by beeing cut by the belt's steel rollers that freeze up due to bearings failing from coke dust. Ceramic rollers last many times longer than steel on coke side of the plant. Too expensive for coal side.

PS.Don't put too much water on the coke to keep from burning belt, you will have a penalty for high moisture.

great question

GA Milo

Some coke tends to bounce off the belt at every idler so belt speed needs to be kept low, (I forget the max practical belt speed) otherwise spillage becomes excessive.
