Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) for High-Speed Spindle

03/19/2009 12:09 AM

I operate a CNC router table with a high speed spindle. I'm looking to upgrade to a new spindle but need to know if the variable frequency drive I currently have will work with this new spindle.

The new spindle has the following stats: 300Hz, 1kw, 18000RPM.

The frequency drive is made by LS Industrial Systems - Starvert SV008IC5-1F

The info on their website suggests that this particular drive can reach 400HZ, but I'm not sure about the other details, especially whether or not 1kw is too high.

More info is available using this link:

http://eng.lsis.biz/product/product/introduce/ecatalog_viewStream.asp?catalog_id=288&fileNum=1

Any advice would be welcome.

Not the way I read it. The old drive is good for 0.75 KW max. You need a 1 KW at least. You may be able to use the current drive at light loads, but it would be best to upgrade the drive.

You have to take care on the following things

  • Look on the 1kW spindle motor, how much current it needs?
  • Compare it with the current that the actual VFD can deliver (for a model SV004 it is 2.5 ampères.)
  • Look on the 1kW spindle motor how much voltage it needs at 300Hz
  • Compare it or program it in the actual VFD drive.

Mostly a frequency drive gives it input voltage (400V) at the output connections when it is at 50 Hz. In your case this will be different. The spindle motor only needs +/- 67 volts at 50Hz. You have to program the correct voltage/frequency ratio in the frequency software.

  • as I see it at this moment, I think you also have to change the VFD.

You have to program base frequency to 300Hz and then use it. It can be used for most applications of routing.I presume the base voltage of motor is 230V . I do this every week.
