Grounding a Door

03/19/2009 11:39 AM

I have a question about grounding of electrical board :

In my opinion and the according the standard about security, project and construction of electrical board [ 1000 voltage level ], all the metallic parts must be grunded [ for example : metalic doors, metallic surfaces, etc.].

We don´t maintain the door and the cabinet in the same potencial via the hinges.

The hinges may present damage [ corrosion, bad electric contact , etc.].

In my opinion, the correct is to use a wire and/or a grounding cooper strap for the perfect grounding . We can use the hinges , in this case, do you agree with me?

Well, I'd bung a flexible earth bond across that door hinge. Then, I've been stung too often. <Wheeze>

It's not an absolute requirement in the US for a grounding strap across hinges, but there is nothing stopping you from doing it. However it is an equipment requirement in Canada (if you want CSA listing) and in other countries. So take that for what it's worth.

Correct. If the doors require earthing as part of the standard (or just plain design common sense) never rely on the hinges alone to do this. There are exceptions to the rule, but it is best to just bond the door to the cabinet with a suitably-sized wire.
