Alternate for Solenoid Coils

03/22/2009 1:36 AM

Is there any alternate, cheaper system for electrical solenoid coils which can produce a force of ~12 Kg and distance of ~6MM? If it is available please explain the sytem

Solenoid are not only cheaper but they offer leaner motion with out too much of paraphernalia.they are simple and easy to use. Theoretically there can be many ways of eliminating solenoid. But not at the low cost.

Manual actuation of the equipment would eliminate the need to purchase those expensive coils.

I'm not sure I understand your question, but have you considered using pneumatic cylinders, they're light, fast and cheap (if you happen to have a supply of clean compressed air and a nearby solenoid valve). Check out FESTO, SMC etc.

If the travel distance is any smaller one can consider piezo electric actuators.

Metallic bellows with compressed air or hydraulic force and work as well.

Typically a solenoid is the cheapest way for an electric current to move something. when large forces are required, frequently a solenoid triggers the release of another, larger force. For your scenario a secondary source (pneumatics, hydraulics) would probably be best.

Car door locks often use a motor geared to a thread to produce the linear motion. More parts than a solenoid but mass produced so low cost - or get from a scrap yard.

Decision may depend on whether you want it to stay in both positions, in which case the lock mechanism will save power and heat too.

In my experience solenoids always finish up marginal for power, especially when they get hot.
