Pole-Mounted Load Break Switch

03/24/2009 4:37 AM

Dear All.

I would like to ask some question regarding to Load Break Switch, Pole Mounted Type.

if i choose Air Insulated Type ,is this type able to interrupt current when On Load condition (system is energized) and also able to loss arching ?

Or i must choose SF6 type or Vacuum Interrupter Type for breaking in ON LOAD condition.

it means Air Insulated type only able to use if system is de-energized (OFF LOAD).is it right ?

HI

LOAD BREAK SWITCH is different from Circuit Breaker. Circuit breaker automatically trips to interrupt the overload, shortcircuit current. In LBS, a fuse is the safety device. Air Break type can break operating currents even on load, but arching will be there above the rated current flow. Arch chute chambers may be provided by the manufacturer if possible.

It depends on the air insulated switch. Some are designed as isolators and not designed for breaking normal load and some are designed as load break switches and are fitted with arc suppressors.

Have a look at transmission and distribution switchgear manufacturer's websites for more information on what they can supply.

thank you Jack,

it means, now i already have more than 1 option. For my operation when ON LOAD, I

can buy LBS Vacuum Type or Air Insulated Type but must be completed with Surge

Suppressors...

Don't forget about SF6 gas insulated. They all have their different advantages and disadvantages, so make sure you weigh them up against each other (not just choose the cheapest one).

but must be completed with Surge Suppressors...

You want arc suppressors specifically. The difference between the two is that arc suppressors are specifically designed to quench the arc ACROSS the switch contacts when breaking load current, where as surge suppressors (or diverters) are designed to divert a surge voltage to ground on one side of the switch (such as a lightning strike).
