2006 GMC Sierra - Shifting into Second Gear

03/25/2009 8:54 AM

I have a 2006 gmc sierra 1500 4x4 crew cab 5.3 and i found out that i dont have second gear. I just changed the 1, 2 shift solenoid and that seemed to give me second gear again but it takes a while to shift into 2nd. Also, before when i would rev it up it, the rev limiter would stop it at about 5000 rpm, but now when i rev it up it doesnt stop and goes right to 6000 rpm. Thats as high as it goes too. And i cant go to pass anyone cuz the overdrive kicks in but it goes right down to first gear and just stays there and revs at 6000 rpm. Does anyone have any information on this?

Go to auto-zone and they'll put the code reader on and find the trouble so you don't waste time and money fixing what's not broken.

You are just three years old, do you still have warrenty left? This sounds like Chevy's problem. There is probably a service advisory out, and a reprogram of your chip set will solve it.

As stated above,

Let me guess at it: You have the 700r4 transmission. I purchased a 1987 Gmc Jimmy with the same year/model 700r4 transmission as stock. From 1986 to 1997 (the year I gor rid of it (it was stolen) that model 700r4 transmission underwent over 700 upgrades over the years and still was not perfected. I bought a Ford.

Check your throttle kick down you may have it set to high to compensate for the lack of second gear, that was what I did when mine went out. Also by the rpm gauge going 1000 rpm over suggests the throttle kickdown.

General motors coulden't build a transmission if you gave them the plans.
