surging in compressors

Can any one explain why in centrifugal compressors due to surging the impeller rotates in backward direction, but it never happens in the case of centrifugal pumps.

The impeller does not rotate "in backward direction" when a centrifugal compressor enters surge. There is however a flow reversal through the machine. This is a cyclical event which can result in damage to the machine.

This does not occur in pumps.

Hello Prof

You don't say why it doesn't occur in pumps. I would say it happens in compressors because the compressibility of air (or gas) allows the mass of air in the machine to go backwards and forwards. Compressibility of liquids being negligible is why it doesn't happen in pumps.
