OPGW and ADSS Implementation and Measurements

03/27/2009 12:20 PM

Hello. I need information about practical implementation of Optical Fiber over Power Lines for my engineering degree written assignment (some sort of a thesis but called "memoria" in my country). I finished my studies last year at Universidad de Santiago de Chile and I could use some help from the experts! What I'm specifically looking for is real site measurements in the equipment used for an aerial or self supported or power line FO network, like power losses and attenuation, data rates, distance covered, amount of ADMs used, use of optical amplifiers (EDFA or whatever was used), what equipment was used... basically everything practical that would help me gather enough information in order to deliver a solid paper and later presentation. So basically, what I need is the details of an implemented system. Anywhere. I know you people are great, I've read some of your posts here and many of you have vast experience and I really, really need your help with contacts and expertise. I'd be more than thankful.

Optical Ground Wire (OPGW)

All-Dielectric Self-Supporting Aerial (ADSS) Cable.

ah, yes. These two wire technologies are the ones I'm describing in the theoretical part of the document. But what I need are measurements from actual installations. Thanks anyway.

Hi, try Fortis Alberta. When ever they install a new power-line a fiber optic line is installed in the shield wire. This shield wire serves two purposes. First to protect the overhead lines from lightning and the other for communication between substations and main control. The operators can control breakers, switches and monitor transformers. The system has been in place for many years so they will have the data to help you out.
