Fuel Stop Valves and Hydraulic Relay Problem

03/30/2009 2:24 PM

Liquid fuel and Gas fuel stop valve Hydraulic relay problem and stuck up problem. We have a 09 nos. of GE FRAME –VI, MARK-V controlled GAS TURBINE . 06 nos. supplied by BHEL-INDIA and 03 nos, from NUOVO PIGNONE . Last 02 years we are facing problem like Liquid fuel stop valve (VS-1) and Gas fuel control valve Hydraulic relay problem. (*) When we stop the machine or trippeing of machine and after resolving problem we go for machine start up, during this time while AHOP(auxiliary hydraulic oil pump) start Liquid fuel stop valve (VS-1) open its oven without firing permissive through. By oepning the Hydraulic relay to solve this problem servicing done and we found most of time thin layer of sludge or bad surface. So after servicing relay we use it working ok. This happened 10-15 times in Nuovo pignone machine. (*) After 10-15 hrs. or few days stopping of Gas fuel supply we operate GCV it found stuck up condition . Or its Hydraulic relay not working. Sometimes after servicing of relay works ok and some time we have to done mechanical rousing of the valve for smooth operation What are the probable reasons for Liquid stop valve and GCV hydraulic relay problem or stuck-up problem? Is it because of lube oil? pl. suggests to resolve this problem.

Mineral oil will break down with increase temperatures. The temperature of your oil must be kept to the recommended range. Oil will start producing varnish and sludge as little as two weeks when the temp is high. The half life of oil increases for very 10C above normal. This might mean installing a cooler or changing the oil out more frequently. If the system is already contaminated by bad oil all the lines/valves will have to removed and cleaned and purged with good oil. Hope this helps.

That is what I think is happening

Found some information on oils.

Rule of Thumb

The service life of petroleum based oil is specified as

30 years @ 85 degrees F (30 degrees C)
15 Years @ 104 degrees F (40 degrees C)
3 months @ 212 degrees F (100 degrees C)

For every 10 degrees F (10 degrees C) oil temperature increases, the lubricants expected life is halved

Tip from Lubrication for Industry by Kenneth Bannister (Industrial Press)

Why do you think your supposed to change your oil in your car engine every three months. Go figure.

Hope this helps.
