What Type of Transformer Do I Need?

04/06/2009 1:13 AM

Hi, I'm just enquiring about a transformer. It will have a supply voltage of 415v, 3 phase, at 50 Hz (Australian 3 phase supply) and with 191A each phase, and 137.5kVA. It will be supplied from a generator. The transformer will be used to step voltage down so that the generator can supply American 3phase equipment at 240v, at 60 Hz and with as close to the maximum supply ratings as possible. At the moment, I do not know what the load will be. The generator that I have will be supplying the transformer, and then the transformer will be feeding a distribution board, which I can only assume at the moment that it will be supplying various loads. The set up is being put together for use is South America. I was wondering if anyone has any ideas as to what type of transformer that I'd be looking for? Would an Autotransformer be ok for this? Also, is it ok to run equipment that normally runs at 60hz, at 50hz? Any information that you could give to me would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi

why you are feeding supply to transformer. You can direct feed the panel from generator.generaly we feed the transformer from electricity board and feed the distribution panel direct from generator so that at one time service electric board supply work and in absence of that genertor supply work so kindly used a power ditribution transformer having tap changing option so that you can get voltege acc to your requirment

  • seb supply>transformer>distribution panel>load
  • Generator> pannel> load

A transformer will not change the frequency, so anything with a motor or transformer rated for use at 60Hz will not work properly at 50Hz. But if you are supplying a generator anyway, why use a 50Hz generator? Why not just get a 60Hz unit?
