Voltage Vector Surge Relay

04/06/2009 3:24 AM

We are running an 8 mw biomass based independent power plant. For generator protection we have installed MRG2 relay. Power is supplied to nearest grid at voltage level of 66 kv. The problem is that whenever there is tripping of any 11 kv feeder of the substation our vector surge relay is operated. I have set the angle of the relay to 7 deg but the surge is to the tune of 10-11 deg. Should i increase the setting to avoid frequent trippings or that will endanger the generator protection

Homer Simpson would press a few buttons in a wild panic and then run from the control room...D'OH!!!

...seriously though, I have a guru friend who works on high voltage stuff who may answer your question if your request is fairdinkum.

Dear Jaswant can you tell me how did you measured the angle of fault. If it is recorded in the fault record of the relay then you will have to increase the setting no option but canyou tell me what time delay is there with this setting because typically fault clearence time in grid with 11KV system is of the order of 100 to 150ms so can you mail me the settings 0f the relay. To avoid tripping you wil have to change the time curve or set the relay to have on delay of 200ms.

Your relay may be instanteneous, think of delaying it's tripping, i.e introduce a timer to give chance to the breakers downstream

you dont change the VSR setting normally relay set is max 6 to 7 deg

u may change the setting u faced problem more, it operate safe to our equipment also us.
