416 SS Parts Need More Corrosion Resistance

04/06/2009 3:37 PM

I have a line of transportation locks that use a 416 stainless steel bar that's exposed to the elements in normal use. After a couple of illinois winters the SS gets some surface rust on it. What cost effective treatments (passivating etc.), or coatings/platings would give me a nominal increase in protection?

I can Electroless Nickel w/Teflon plate the 1.5"dia x 2" long bar for $5 each. I'm looking for any better alternatives.

You could hard chrome plate and polish or change to a differant grade of stainless.

416 is a Leaded stainless that makes it easy to machine but does not stand up to the elements. 303 or 304 would work well

416 Stainless is used for higher heat applications especialy exhaust systems on cars and trucks. The 304, 304L(leaded) will not handle the heat cycling but does not corrode in outdoor applications. I made an elementary roof rack for my van from 304l pipe it's been exposed the Southern Ontario weather for about 12 years (2 trucks) and only shows rust if a steel pipe is draged over it (deposits steel) That can easily be removed.
