ASTM A841 Grade C Class 2

04/08/2009 2:53 AM

As subject..

Is it common to replace ASTM A516 Grade 70 with ASTM A841 Gr C Cl 2 for propane storage?

Does anyone know about the max allowable stress of ASTM A841?

Thank you very much..

hi Premium,

about your first question (in the title), see the chart below. it you'd like a bigger image, clicking on the image will take you to the file itself:

for ASTM A516 Grade 70, its data sheet is here (http://masteel.co.uk/downloads/carbon.pdf - sorry, link no longer available).

both steels are for pressure vessels, but I guess the choice should be left to your client and not the fabricator. make sure material specs are clearly indicated in the client's requisition, and get their approval on any substitute material, in writing.

you might also want to consider other materials for propane storage.

Hi langyaw..

Thanks for answering..

Anyways, is it common to use A841 material as propane storage tank?

One more question..

Do you have any info about its max allowable stress? I haven't found it listed in the stress tables..

Thank you very much..

hi Premium,

ASTM A841 is a material for pressure vessels, no doubt about it. pressure vessels, on the other hand, are built according to strict codes, and per client's specifications. commonality of usage is something I don't know.

as to your 2nd Q, the stress data are available here. I believe the data is for sale.
