Cable Drum Engineering

11/16/2006 8:42 PM

Does anyone know of a standard technique used for designing cable drums. i.e for the length and weight of cable to be held and then fedfrom the drum.

Also interested in any information regarding the design and manufacture of very large cable drums.

I'm not sure where you can find that info, but speaking as an ex-tower erector definately do your homework. I've seen drums collapse and tear right out of the front of hoists. The bad thing is its usually not the operator that gets hurt, its the person hooking up the load.

Thanks jowens.

Good advice and at the forefront of my questions.

I actually found a really good Drum capacity calculator online (Ingersoll Rand) which is a great start. In fact, Now that we know the size, and we were pretty close with the initial calcs, it is now down to the strength, motorisation and breaking systems. Our Company structural engineers will be handling that part now. I am now under the impression that they will know what to do there. A lot at stake.

With regards to people in front of the drum, it is for the back of a ship and used to lay subsea cabling, so the cable just runs off the back of the vessel. No need for human intervention except at each end.

Thanks again

Check with overhead crane manufacturer. They regularly use these for overhead gantry style cranes.
