Engine Hour Meters

04/14/2009 1:45 AM

Hiii!

Our hourmeters fitted in tippers are failing frequently. Say if a hourmeter was showing 3347.1 hours then abruptly it starts reading from 77499.7. This is the most frequent failure we have observed so far. Can any one help me out with ideas for diagnozing this problem? Thanks in advance.

Just wondering about the environment they are working in. Are they or could they be damaged somehow mechanically? Do you see any linkage between brands of machine and brand of hourmeter? Vibration comes to mind; any alterations to the orginal placement? Is the machine having any electrical problems about the same time as this failure?

Just use electro-mechanical hourmeter. It will be better than the digital one with digital display.

are these electronic units? i ised to install VDO or smiths units which were mechanical and vibration driven. never had a problem with them. The vibration driven types have no connections, you just install it and the movement of operation drives it. I spent hours trying to get them not to work without success. Sounds like a programming fault if electronic or possibly interference from opther equipment.

Hii

These are electronic hourmeters and are mounted inside the cabin. Hence, there is no interference from other equipments as such. The input to the hourmeter (24V) comes from the oil pressure switch. Does this arrangement is creating any trouble?

Also plz tell me if I replace this electronic hourmeter by an electro-mechanical hourmeter(as suggested), how the hourmeter is going to work?

Digital meters with digital display can get reset with some interference/ spike etc. But the electromechanical meter is nothing but a constant speed motor with mechanical rotaion counter, something similar to odometers of old generation cars.

Some digital meters may get reset to zero if power fails (if no battery back up is provided), besides, its probability of getting disturbed and showing any random figure (as in your case). But electromechanical counter is mechanism, which can not come to zero, even in case of power failure. Also it can not change to some random number with any sort of interference.

It can be reset to zero, only with push of lever, which mechanically resets the counter wheels.

All the best

If the hourmeters are showing erroneous behaviour due to sudden voltage surges or spikes, then how can i confirm this? Also, kindly tell me if this is the case then how should i prevent and eliminate the cause.

No such problem will be there in electromechanical type
