Power Plants and PLCs

04/17/2009 12:30 AM

Hello,

I have been in discussion with one power plant manufacture which offer power services to oil or gas company.

The generator output power is about 2000kW, they need new tech to upgrade their control system, including gas turbine and generator.

I am not sure if one PLC controller is enough to finish this work, could anyone tell me if there is complete control sets which can be used for this small-powered plant control, including fire-start, protection and related controls.

Thanks very much!

Hello

Now a days people talk three parallel redundant PLC operating for control of Gas Turbines for reliability.

All G T manufacturers use their own branded control system.

You have to check with the manufacturer I am sure He will offer you the control system (start,Operation and shutdown system including emergency)

PLC will do the trick i have seen Caterpillar and Cummins engines operating with PLC including remote starting stopping via Telephone lines and satalite connectivity and Solar turbines fitted with PLCs from Alanbrodly or Honeywell carporations Plcs you can call either of them for your specific use.

The PLC is and has been widely used for boiler flame safety controls for decades. Name brands such as Allen Bradly, Modicon, and GE come to mind. I haven't done this type of programming in 2 decades, so there are probably many more that qualify today. You should stay with a UL approved vendor using fail safe (and hang proof) IO. Sensors approved for use with gas turbines will not come from your PLC manufacturer.

Good Luck and stay safe.

we replaced our original controls on our 2 10,000 HP turbines with PLC's. We have 2, 1 runs, the other is a fail over.
