Air Conditioner Fuse VS Breaker Sizes

04/20/2009 9:26 AM

If air conditioner label says MOCP 30a... should both the fuse at the disconnect as well as the breaker at the panel be 30amps maximum?

I've had some people tell me to use 30a fuse at disconnect, but use larger breaker at the panel? Does the NEC permit using a larger breaker at the panel?

The purpose of the breaker / fuse at the panel is to protect the wiring - so determine the capacity of the wiring with the distance to the load (roughly).

Unless you feed more than one circuit with that breaker. But large appliances are usually segregated for exactly this reason.

Ok, thanks.

So the wire size between the disconnect and the a/c compressor can/might be smaller than the feeder wire from disconnect back to the panel?

Unless the circuit is segregated - then a "mains" circuit would feed smaller circuits, like your disconnect.

Where is your electrician?

Just learning is all, not doing any wiring myself !

Just trying to understand whether or not a guy who puts a 30a fuse in a disconnect might need to use a 40a breaker at the panel. I can see by your answer why he would.

Thanks much

I'd like to add that what you also should consider is the Minimum Circuit Ampacity (MCA). This spec. allows you to run the smallest gauge wire permitted, as long as you don't violate code.

You should, by all means, use the same breaker size as well as fuse size in the disconnect. This circuit is only for the a/c condenser only and nothing else should be aloud to operate on this circuit.
