Broadband for Sale

11/20/2006 9:34 AM

In a marketing coup, AirCell announced its exclusive rights to the broadband spectrum that hosts U.S. airline and business aircraft. After a protracted bidding session with the Federal Aviation Commission (FCC) that culminated in an auction, the FCC's air-to-ground spectrum reallocation process is finally complete, and AirCell received its license to become the first company in history to "own" broadband rights. With service beginning in 2008, there will be no competition for this airspace within the U.S. AirCell's Wi-Fi hotspots will provide airline internet users the ability to check their e-mail and surf the Web using AirCell's Axxess™ communications system.

I'm just waiting for them to "sell out" to a company that is publicly traded, like cingular, or vonage, or maybe Google ;)
- or maybe with this new license in-hand they'll offer an IPO to raise the capital needed to go big quickly? That way we can invest in their future success.

These guys have struggled for over a decade against predatory phone and microwave com companies that wanted to own it all, high-dollar lawyers from cellphone companies, and several road blocks by FCC and other regulatory snafus, with only private backing and financing...and a good engineering team able to invalidate the bogus claims of the corporate teams.

If they can get their network finally and fully deployed while still a small engineering/development company that has had limited production (probably less than 100 employees, I'd guess), then they'll have earned whatever price the market will bear for their service.

My pilot brother says it's one of the best features on their aircraft for the passengers - keeps the clients happy!

Personally, I'm just wondering how long it'll take to realize that thousands of aircraft with a broadband antenna on the bottom makes a very attractive nationwide wireless internet and VoIP network... ;)

I wrote this article. I'm glad it was noticed. Wonder how far the ownership will ultimately extend?
