Post Weld Heat Treatment for Repair Welding of 17-4 ph

04/22/2009 1:00 AM

I need to repair weld 17-4 ph grade forged part. Hardnes is in the range of 32 to 35 HRC. Mostly it is solution annealed followed by double ageing at 620 deg C. Component was in service for around 10 years.

Filler wire most recommended for this is ER 630.

My question is: Is it reqired to do post weld heat treatment. if yes at what temperature? cycle?

Hello,

I have worked with 17-4 castings for a new Porsche automotive braking system and was able to use 304 stainless filler material.

One major problem I encountered both in machining and welding ,(Specifically drilling and tapping), was impurities from the lost wax, porcelain coating. It was impossible to tap some castings and others were sputtering during touch-up welding, due to the inclusions.

I found that www.matweb.com was a very good resource for the details of the material, including manufacturers. You may be able to get a welding guide sheet on the site or directly from the manufacturer. Hope this helps. I would suggest annealing immediately after welding as that is what my welder did.
