Effects of Reverse VARS on Genset

04/23/2009 7:45 AM

We have a CAT 2MW, 480 VAC Diesel Genset that runs in parallel with 4 identical units and utility power. It recently had a failure due to Reverse VARS as indicated on the CAT DVR. The main rotor now shows a resistance of 223 ohms and the surge suppessor on the rotating rectifier is blown. Rectifiers are still good. There appears to be no other damage to the unit. Does anyone know of any technical papers that explain the negative effects or resultant damage caused by Reverse VARS. The only info I have found describe that Reverse VARS are undesirable and may cause rotor overheating. Thanks
