Learning to Program

11/20/2006 1:27 PM

I would like to start learning to program in Visual Basic. I have some programming experience as I do a lot of PIC Microcontroller development. What do I need (e.g., editor, compiler, etc.)? Any online course that can put me on track?

You will need to get hold of a copy of (a version of) the Microsoft VB development environment - a big name, but it's just a kind of desk-top which allows you to write and test bits of program. It includes the editor, compiler and all you need. The tutorials are good, so if you've already got the idea of programming, it should be fairly straightforward.

I believe MS are only selling a product called Visual Basic .Net, which I am not alone in thinking is an inferior product to VB6 (now unsupported). VB.NET seems to want you to do everything as if it were destined for publication on the web. If this is what you want, then go for it.

If you can get hold of an MS Visual Studio package (including VB6 or whatever) from somewhere (ebay?), it would give you everything you need - lots of libraries full of 'help' and 'how to' stuff.

BTW What are you using to program the PICs? Assembler? C? Basic?

Dear mother MS seems to believe that everything should be web based. They also think that they should own all software and everyone should "rent" time to use it... Kind of reminds one of the old main frame days with IBM in control doesn't it????
