current control

hi all,

i have diesel engine lincoln welding machine and there is adjustable reactor to control the current, as i can see, the reactor is just copper winding ''thick'' around metal core.

my uestion is about the core, i mean if i remove the metal core, then it will be just coil made from copper! will it control the current? or the metal core is the reason to release some power around the reactor?

your help is highly appreciated

Dear,

What you see the metal is nothing but a magnet core. Having high magnetism, & requires low magnetising power. This is measured by inductance L. Higher the value of L, better will be the current limit action.

If you remove the metal magnet, all left is just a coil with an air medium. This shall require very high ( beyond the rating of welding m/c ) theoritically, & current limit operation will not be possible in practical terms. As inductance L value vwill be very low.
