Flex or flexless

Speaking of officially "flex-fuel" cars:

While flex fuel is often cheaper (Shell) these days, it still costs more to operate on ethanol (most flex fuels) due to 20-30% mpg decrease.

So why use flex fuel?

Better, why buy flex fuel car unless the flex feature is free?

When asking such a question one must keep in mind this is truly a global community - ergo such terms as "flex-fuel" cars: are going to have to be defined.

I worked with a flex fuel carburetor that ate anything from bunker fuel to diesel to Jet B to nearly alcohol.

And fuel pricing terminology varies just as much.

Are we talking about gasoline with a substantial portion of ethanol/methanol? I would be surprised to see a 30% drop, unless you are running 100% *thanol. Then I would expect starting problems.

So what portion of gasoline/*thanol are we talking?

And you might want to burn it because it is cheaper - or you might want to burn it because it is more environmentally friendly or renewable, or because you get a great tax incentive or in the US - you get to use HOV lanes - in some cities depending on what alt fuel you use and which side of the bed the legislature got up on.
